Greetings and salutations,
The Concerned Black Men of Richmond, Inc. kicked off our 2018 session of events with a trip to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. We viewed “The Sally Hemmings” exhibit which opened in 2017. It is the first road trip that we have undertaken in a few years and was a great success!
We left Richmond in our van and 2 cars with 15 enthusiastic young men. The staff at Monticello was very helpful and pleased that we chose them for one of our activities. The tour started with a bus ride the grounds at Monticello. The Sally Hemmings exhibit was a combination of videos, artifacts and a tour of slave quarters. There was a promissory note for the purchase of a slave and many photos of the lineage of the Hemmings family line up to the present time.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the information. She entertained questions and there were many from the audience; some were even from our youth.
The tour bus driver showed us several points of interest on the way back to the entrance and we concluded with a visit to a slave burial ground near the exit.
We left Monticello and had lunch at Pizza Hut near the University of Virginia in downtown Charlottesville.
This was an outstanding, impactful event; and major achievement for CBM-RVA. This event was made possible in part by the generosity of Dr. Harold and Mrs. Carol Jones. They graciously paid for the admissions of all the mentees! Thank you to each of you who have contributed to the Concerned Black Men of Richmond! You are truly making a difference in the lives of our youth and the community.

The Concerned Black Men of Richmond started the session off by attending the 30th Annual 2nd St Festival in Historic Jackson Ward October 6th & 7th. We manned our usual booth next to the voter registration booth on Community Row. There was a lot of interest shown in our organization and a couple of former members stopped by as well. A few prominent politicians visited our booth and it was nice to thank Senator Jennifer McClellan in person for her assistance with the Capitol Tour that we went on last session. There was a lot of interest shown by parents many expressed their appreciation for what we are doing in the community.
The 2nd Street Festival has provided The Concerned Black Men of Richmond with excellent exposure for a number of years and we hope the relationship will continue for years to come.

Greetings all,
Last month the Concerned Black Men of Richmond concluded our 2017-18 year with a cookout at Dorey Park. The food and fellowship with parents, mentees, donors and brothers was enjoyed by all. There is 1 graduate this year in the youth corps, Da’Vontae Ballou. He has been a member since the 5th grade and graduated from Armstrong High School. Da’Vontae will be attending J Sargent Reynolds Community College in the fall.
There were 2 of last year’s graduates in attendance, Torian Jones and Ramone Jeffers. They shared their college experiences and it was great to see them achieving their goals!
We would like to take an opportunity to thank each of you for the interest and support you have shown our organization. This year we even got our van painted and it looks great!
Your support is instrumental in ensuring that we can continue to provide lessons and experiences that positively impact the young men we serve. Please feel free to make suggestions on how we can improve our organization.

Greetings all,
The Concerned Black Men of Richmond had our Etiquette Pt2 event at Ristorante La Grotta on May 19th. Antonio & Andrea Capece, the owners of LaGrotta have graciously opened their world class establishment to us since 2010! The mentees have learned to appreciate the quality of food that they rarely get an opportunity to experience. The crew at LaGrotta always serve the young men the same way that the dignitaries are treated.
After we were all seated, Andrea instructed the group on proper etiquette in a fine dining establishment.
After the drinks were distributed we were ready for the meal to begin!
The waiters described each course in detail to the mentees. We started with a vegetarian puff pastry.
There were mixed reactions from the mentees to this very unique appetizer.
That was followed by the Pasta Trio which many were already familiar with
The main course was a choice of Veal, Chicken Marsala, Filet of Sole or Salmon!
The boys were excited to try some new things and many of them really enjoyed their entrees!
They were all well mannered and used proper etiquette during this time. It was wonderful to observe.
Malik Mayo (wearing glasses) is an aspiring chef and he told us that his specialty is seafood!
We discussed many things during our lunch. They were amazed at the wine list and could not believe that anyone would pay $2000 for a bottle of anything!
The final course was a coconut cake with peach sorbet! That was enjoyed by everyone!
The Concerned Black Men of Richmond cannot thank the management and staff of Ristorante LaGrotta enough for their continued support in this endeavor. They have assisted us for a number of years going back as far as 2010!
The support from donors like you all allows us to provide impactful experiences to the young men of our community. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and it is making a difference in the lives of the youth we serve!

The Concerned Black Men of RVA recently conducted our Etiquette Pt1 event. The event was held on Saturday the 14th at Franklin Military Academy. It is a prerequisite to the LaGrotta Ristorante fine dining outing that will be in May. We discussed proper dress, table settings and how they are expected to conduct themselves in this type of environment. The Concerned Black Men of RVA have been doing this since 2011 and have progressed to a point where the mentees are instructing each other on how to tie neckties!
We also played the movie “Courageous” which illustrates choices, consequences and fatherhood. This is the 2nd time we have shown this movie to our mentees and it was received very well. Afterwards the boys were treated to lunch at McDonald’s.
We would like to again thank each of you who have donated to the Concerned Black Men of RVA. Your support is an integral part to the success of our mission. We strive each month to engage our youth with life enhancing experiences that will assist them in all their future endeavors. Your support means the world to the youth that we serve!
